How Easy Is It to Create a Book — and Add an Audiobook — with StoryKid?

Spoiler: it's really easy. If you've got about ten minutes to answer some questions and an hour of patience while the magic happens, you'll end up with a fully illustrated, personalised children's book — and, if you want, a narrated audiobook in your own voice. Here's exactly how it all comes together.
Step 1 — Create Your Account (2 Minutes)
Before anything else, you'll need a StoryKid account. Head to storykid.ai, click Sign up in the top right, and either enter your email and a password or continue with Google. A quick confirmation email later and you're in, landing on your (soon-to-be-busy) Library page.
Step 2 — Choose Your Tier and Format
From the Create page you'll see three tiers to pick from:
- Dreamer — the shortest book, fewest illustrations, lowest price. Perfect for a quick, affordable gift.
- Explorer — mid-length with more illustrated spreads. A great all-rounder.
- Legend — the flagship. Longest story, highest illustration density, hardcover quality. The one for keepsakes.
Can't decide? Start with Explorer in digital — you can always upgrade to print after you've seen the result.
Once you've picked a tier, choose your format: digital (PDF), softcover, or hardcover delivered to your door.
Step 3 — Fill Out the Questionnaire (~10 Minutes)
This is where the personalisation lives. You'll answer around 17 short questions covering your child's name, age, appearance, personality, favourite things, and the kind of adventure they'd love. Required questions are marked; optional ones you can skip.
You can also upload a photo of your child at this stage — it's optional, but it helps StoryKid generate a character who actually looks like them. (If you'd rather skip, the book still features a consistent, well-drawn character — it just won't be a literal likeness.)
Your answers are saved as you go, so if you lose your place you can log back in and pick up where you left off.
Hit Generate my story when you're done, and you'll see a progress bar — story generation starts immediately.
Step 4 — Review the Story (A Few Minutes)
A few minutes later, your story is ready. StoryKid uses Claude, an AI writing model, to craft a beginning-middle-end narrative with your child as the hero, tailored to your chosen tier's structure.
On the Story page, read through every page. If the tone is off — too scary, too sweet, missing a key detail — click Regenerate story (top right). You can add a short note like "make it more adventurous" or "less about the dragon" to steer the next draft. You can regenerate up to 3 times, so don't be shy about asking for something better.
Happy with it? Click Approve story and start illustrations.
Step 5 — Wait for the Illustrations (5–20 Minutes)
Here's where StoryKid does something clever. Before drawing a single page, it generates a cast sheet — a reference image of every character in the book. Every page illustration is then built from that same cast sheet, which is why your child (and any siblings, pets, or friends you added) looks consistent from page one to the last.
Illustrations stream in one by one as they finish, so you can start previewing them on the Preview page while the rest generate. The whole process takes 5–20 minutes depending on your tier.
If a particular illustration doesn't look right, click on it, hit Regenerate, and a fresh version appears in about 30 seconds. If the character still looks off after one regenerate, reach out to support — they can fix the cast sheet on their end.
Step 6 — Approve the Final Book
Once you're happy with everything, scroll through every spread on the Preview page and click Approve and finish.
- Digital orders: the book lands in your Library instantly as a PDF.
- Print orders: StoryKid sends the file to Lulu (their print partner) within 24 hours, and your book ships from there.
The Audiobook Add-On — Your Voice, Their Story
This is where things get really special. StoryKid lets you add a narrated audiobook to your order — read aloud in a voice cloned from a short recording you make yourself. Yes, really.
How to Add It
From your order flow (or from your Library after the book is approved), look for the Audiobook add-on option and select it.
Recording Your Voice Sample
You don't need any equipment — just your phone or computer and a quiet room. Here's the process:
- Find a quiet spot and read the on-screen prompt aloud. It takes about 30 seconds.
- Keep your mouth close to the mic for a cleaner recording.
- Listen back. If you're happy with it, click Use this sample. If not, re-record until it sounds right.
- StoryKid generates the full audiobook — usually within 10 minutes.
Quick tip: background noise is the enemy of good voice cloning. The quieter the room, the better the result. If your audiobook sounds choppy or robotic, a re-record in a quieter space almost always fixes it.
Sharing the Audiobook
Want grandparents or friends to be able to listen without giving them access to your account? Easy:
- Open the book in your Library.
- Click Share audiobook.
- Optionally set a 4-digit passcode for privacy.
- Copy the link and send it away.
Recipients land on a dedicated listen page with the audiobook player — no StoryKid account needed. If you ever want to revoke the link, one click in the share panel kills it immediately.
From Start to Finish: How Long Does It Actually Take?
Here's the honest timeline:
| Stage | Time |
